“The Mueller Statement”
The statement by Robert Mueller, Special Counsel for the Justice Department, as the honorable Mr. Mueller retires, speaks volumes by his clarity and by his emphasis as well as his silence. The clarity of the statement that Russian operatives did hack the election process in 2016 in an attempt to sabotage Hillary Clinton’s democratic candidacy should be a wake-up call for all Americans. States should spend whatever money is needed to ensure a safe and secure election process for the 2020 election.
Second, the refusal of Mr. Mueller to state that the President had committed no crime speaks volumes regarding the process of government prosecution. A sitting President can only be charged with a crime through the impeachment process of the House and Senate for removal from office. Internal Justice Department rules forbade Mueller from declaring a crime by the President. He did identify multiple attempts by the President to obstruct justice by hindering his investigation. He and his team “punted” this to the House of Representatives where it is properly lodged by the constitution.
Third, Mr. Mueller stated that his report did not exonerate the President and his administration team, but the evidence was not strong enough to declare a conspiracy with Russia and Putin to throw the election to the Republicans. There were contacts between the administration and Russia, but they did not rise to the level of a crime.
As to how the evolution of this continuing probe into this President’s fitness for office will evolve remains to be seen. Stay tuned, my friends, there is a lot more left to be said.
